Oh No! Your Building Materials Were Stolen! Here’s What You Do….

So you’ve been put in charge of constructing a building from the ground up. But wouldn’t you know it? Some hoodlums came on site while everyone was gone and helped themselves to your building materials! If you act quickly, you may be able to recoup your losses and be able to get back to work very shortly.

The Steps To Take

Do not disturb the scene of the crime. Make sure no one comes to disturb it either. Without touching anything, document the scene with multiple photos and videos from various angles. If you have security footage, collect it immediately before it overwrites itself. You can then call the police to request a formal theft report. Only call 911 if the thief is on site. Do not engage with the thief as they may be armed. When the police arrive, be ready to provide a detailed inventory of the stolen items (with serial numbers if applicable), photos and security footage and access logs or sign-in sheets. Before the officer leaves, get a report number for insurance purposes. Contact your insurance provider as soon as you can and be ready to provide your policy number, the address of the project, the aforementioned police report number, the missing inventory and estimated value plus receipts and invoices. Ask about your coverage limits, deductibles, and rental equipment coverage. You have a small window of time to do this, so do it quickly. Go over your contract with the contractor to establish just whose property the materials were. Keep all communications in writing. Cooperate with law enforcement and your insurer and your materials may be recovered or at least recompensated.
